This wonderfully intact amphora consists of an ovoid base, a tall slender neck, a collared rim, two, angled, cylindrical handles and a knop base. A stamp seal appears on each handle. Found in the Holy Land, most likely of Rhodian manufacture. The material used as well as the undecorated exterior and knop base are all features of a utilitarian transport amphora. In addition the stamp seal impressions also designate it as a trade item. These seals were used for making note of such things as the place of production, the manufacturer of the product and the date. Amphorae of this shape were most often used for the transport and storage of wine, with the form of the neck and mouth of the vessel best suited to this purpose. However, amphorae of various shapes and sizes were in use throughout the region for the transport of a variety of objects such as honey, olive oil, wine and fish products to name a few.
