A CANAANITE BICHROME SINGLE HANDLE AMPHORA

Late Bronze Age II; c. 1400-1200 B.C.

The wheel-made terracotta vessel is composed of an ovoid body with an everted rim, an applied ring base and a single handle. It is adorned with black and red painted decoration consisting of horizontal lines on the body and neck between which are various decoration, including stylized grapes on the vine. Horizontal decoration is also present on the handle of the vessel.

Found in Bethlehem. In excellent and original condition.

Produced by local Canaanite craftsmen during the Late Bronze Age these pieces were largely influenced by similar vessels imported from Cyprus. They are distinguishable from their imported counterparts by the type of clay used and the lack of, or minimal, slip.
