A RARE HERODIAN BLACK CLAY MULTIPLE NOZZLE OIL LAMP

A hexagonal terracotta oil lamp with a small central fill hole and six volute nozzles.

In excellent condition with minor restoration to the base of the lamp.

Certificate of Authenticity and Export Approval from the Israel Antiquities Authority Included.

Produced during the time of Herod the Great these lamps were wheel-made with applied nozzles, thus making every Herodian oil lamp unique.

Lamps of this type are most commonly found in the vicinity of Jerusalem suggesting that this was their primary area of manufacture. The black clay of this example is produced by firing the lamp in a reducing environment (one without oxygen).
