Catalog:Jewelry:Gold and Silver: stock #1286104
c. 3nd-1st Century BCE
This pair of gold earrings from the Hellenistic period depicts the face of Eros in a small roundel decorated with a filigree border. The face of the deity is chubby with a wide nose, thick eyebrows and full hair. While no pupils are delineated other details have been well handled such as the ears, the almond eyes and the slightly parted lips. Produced using repousse these earrings are an excellent example of level of craftsmanship present during the Hellenistic period.

Eros, the Roman Cupid, was the god of love and the son of Aphrodite. He was conceived of in earlier Greek mythology as an adult male and was often associated with the arts. However, by the Hellenistic and Roman periods he is often depicted as a child, as in this example, although many of his aspects remained the same. This vision of Eros persisted through the Renaissance and is still with us today.
