Vessels such as this were used in antiquity for the storage of precious liquids, most notably perfume and ointments. Although the term unguentarium generally refers to vessel used to store ointments, or unguents, there is little reason to believe that such artifacts would not have had multiple uses in antiquity.

These vessels can be found in remains of inhabited settlements as well as in tombs.

“Neither gold nor crystal can compare with it, nor can it be had for jewels of gold.” (Job 28:17)
