The Nabateans were a trading culture which inhabited the Southern Levant. They remained largely independent until their conquest by Emperor Trajan and their inclusion into the Roman Empire. Even after this conquest, however, their society continued to thrive. They are most commonly associated with the city of Petra in modern Jordan although their significance and influence went far beyond this individual city.
It has been suggested that the Nabataean kings are those mentioned in the New Testament as the Three Magi although this has not been proven.
