A HELLENISTIC FUSIFORM UNGUENTARIUM

This spindle shaped bottle contains a central, ovoid body with a thin, cylindrical neck terminating in a thick, wide rim to impede the flow of precious oils stored within, such as perfume. The base of the vessel mimics the top and tapers quickly from the main section of the body into a long, cylindrical foot on a flattened base. Made on a wheel, this bottle was then embellished with a red slip and burnished.
