A BEIT NATIF TERRACOTTA OIL LAMP
Catalog:Oil Lamps:Jewish: stock #1311570

4th-5th Century CE

Named for the site of the primary workshop where these lamps were produced in southern Israel they have a distinct form and decoration. Made of a round body with a bow-shaped nozzle and a small pyramid handle. The nozzle has a narrow ridge around its edge and is pinched to create the impression it is voluted. It is also wider than in earlier examples, suggesting that this lamp came from the latter end of their production. Like all Beit-Natif lamps, this example is thoroughly decorated with a raised rim around the fill hole and geometric motifs on the shoulder and nozzle. It is then further embellished with a red slip. Soot on the nozzle shows signs of use in antiquity.

In excellent and original condition with natural Holy Land patina present.

8.5 x 5.5 cm (3.34 x 2.16 inches)
