A BEIT NATIF TERRACOTTA OIL LAMP
Catalog:Oil Lamps:Jewish: stock #1311571

4th-5th Century CE

Named for the site of the primary workshop where these lamps were produced in southern Israel they have a distinct form and decoration. Made of a round body with a bow-shaped nozzle and a small pyramid handle. The nozzle has a narrow rim around its edge and is pinched to create the impression it is voluted. Like all Beit-Natif lamps, this example is thoroughly decorated with a raised rim around the fill hole and geometric motifs on the shoulders and nozzle. The lamp is then further embellished with a red slip. Soot on the nozzle shows signs of use in antiquity.

In excellent and original condition with natural Holy Land patina present.
