Alexander II Zabinas was the unfortunate pawn in the never ending power struggle that was the Hellenist world. Backed by Ptolemy VIII as the adopted son of Antiochus VII, he was for a short time able to defeat Demetrius II and rule parts of the Seleucid Empire. This victory, however, was short lived and he was soon defeated by Antiochus VIII, fled and was ultimately captured and executed in 122 BCE.
