This collection of approximately 5,000 coins of the Holy Land, from the late Persian period to the time of the Crusaders, represents one of the finest private collections of this coinage ever compiled. Formed by Abraham David Sofaer, currently the George P. Schultz Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University and former federal judge and legal advisor of the US State Department, along with his wife, Marian Scheuer-Sofaer over a period of more than thirty years, many of the coins have been donated to the American Numismatic Society and the Israel Museum in Jerusalem in memory of Ya'akov Meshorer. Currently, the remainder of the collection is on long-term loan to the American Numismatic Society.

The publication of this collection represents the last publication of Prof. Ya'akov Meshorer (1935-2004), who was the founding curator of the numismatic department of the Israel Museum, Jerusalem in 1969 and was from 1975 to 1982 and again from 1990 to 1996 the Chief Curator for Archaeology at the Israel Museum. A prominent and well-respected numismatist whose interests covered all the ancient coinages of the Holy Land, Meshorer wrote numerous books and articles on various topics dealing with all the coinage of this area.

Published in two volumes – one volume each of text and plates – the collection is laid out chronologically by period and represents a substantial overview of the coinage of this region over a period of almost a millennium. Although coins issued by ancient local rulers (including those of Judaea, Samaria, and Nabataea), as well as the post-Greco-Roman periods, form an integral part of the collection, it is the publication of the collection's imperial city coins from Israel, Palestine, and adjoining countries that has been long awaited. This publication represents the first book on this subject since the publication of the Rosenberger collection in the 1970s. Published by the American Numismatic Society as part of their "Ancient Coins in North American Collections" Series, this work will appeal not only to numismatists and collectors, but those interested in the history of this fascinating region. An essential reference for historians, for the specialized collector, as well as for dealers, and institutions.
